The 5th edition GEBCO chart series of ocean depths consists of 19 charts: 
16 sheets on Mercator Projection covering sections of the world between 72 degrees 
North and South latitudes at a scale of 1:10 million at the equator (0.438 inch/degree 
longitude); a single World chart also on Mercator Projection covering the same latitudes 
at a scale of 1:35 million (0.125 inch/degree); and two polar sheets on Polar 
Stereographic Projection to 64 degrees North and South latitude respectively at a scale 
of 1:6 million at the pole.

Each chart measures approximately 3 by 4 feet. Ocean areas are shaded in blues with a 
basic contour interval of 1000 meters but smaller intervals are used in many places. 
Land areas, also contoured at 1000 meters, are shaded in light browns.  Major seafloor 
features and islands are identified as are major land features, countries and ports. 

The 5th edition GEBCO charts were completed between 1975 and 1984.  Although some areas 
of the seafloor have since been mapped in greater detail, this chart series produced by 
an international group of marine geologists and cartographers remains the most widely 
accepted and available compilation of world-wide ocean depths.  (The GEBCO chart series 
continues to be revised, with the 6th Edition to be released in the few years in
both paper and digital forms).
