OVERVIEW

The collection includes approximately 40,000 lots of sorted specimens. Approximately 30,000 have been cataloged and about 30% of these have been identified to species. Researchers from the institution have collected samples from the intertidal and neritic zone, the basins of the continental borderland, and the bathy-abyssal plains. Although world wide in scope, greatest strengths are in the North Pacific Ocean, especially Southern California to Panama. The holdings also include a representative collection of reef corals especially from the central Pacific. Collecting devices have included SCUBA, otter trawls, grabs, sleds and dredges. Published catalogs and an electronic data base of holdings of various groups are available at nominal cost*, and specimens may be examined here or by loan to qualified researchers.

Loan Policy:

Loans can be made to qualified individuals through their institutions for the purposes of research, exhibition, or education. Student loans should be made through their professor. Holotypes, Paratypes, one-of-a-kind, or very rare specimens may be limited to inspection at Scripps. Any technique that alters the physical state of the specimen must be authorized.

Outgoing loans are accompanied by a loan form which describes the specimens, gives the collection data, and shows numerically how many of each species is loaned. Loans are normally made for a period of one year, though extensions may be granted upon written request from the loan recipient. The Benthic Invertebrate Collection should be acknowledged in publications resulting from use of material or data. A reprint of each such publication or report is requested for the collections library.

Holotypes of any new species described should be deposited in the Benthic Invertebrate Collection here at the institution in La Jolla, California, or other major collection deemed appropriate by the Curator, and paratypes should be deposited in the United States National Museum of Natural History, Washington, D. C. unless other arrangements have been approved.

Material loaned may not be transferred to individuals or institutions other than those designated as borrowers without prior written authorization. Loans are intended for research only and should not be for commercial purposes or sale. These and any additional policies as may be determined on a case by case basis, are intended to ensure the collection remains accessible to and best serves the interests of the academic community.
